Police in Kraków, Poland, said a man drove into the city's Main Market Square and began firing at random people from his car at around 3pm local time on Saturday. Officers shot and detained the suspect, who was taken to hospital with injuries. Polish police identified him as a Polish citizen and said he was the only known perpetrator, denying social media reports of a second suspect at large. [S1] [S2] [S3]

Police and news agency reports said five people were killed and around a dozen others, including two police officers, were wounded. However, the Guardian's live coverage reported that the death toll later rose to six, attributing that figure to the regional Malopolski government; other outlets in this packet continued to report five dead, so the exact final toll is not settled across the sources reviewed. Police said the attacker wore military-style attire and, according to the Guardian's sourcing from Małopolska police, used military-type firearms, with additional weapons found in his car. A tram was also shot at on a nearby route, though the city of Kraków said no passengers or the driver were hurt. [S1] [S3]

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, President Karol Nawrocki, and other officials said the circumstances and motive of the attack were still being investigated and that no motive had been announced. The US ambassador to Poland, Tom Rose, called it a mass shooting and said the United States stood with Poland. [S1] [S2] [S3]
